Why I geek over Dinosaurs by Raimy from Readaraptor

RAWR!!
Sorry about that, I like to Rawr, a lot. Did you know it means I Love You in dinosaur, well maybe it doesn’t, but I like to think so.
Anyway, If you know me, or if you stumble across my blog you might notice that I have a liking of dinosaurs. This is my geeky obsession, not just because dinosaurs are a bit geeky, but because of how this came about...
Dinosaurs are really, really cool. They are pretty much the underdog because I mean, come on, they’re dead, and I like to support the underdog. You can see them in animals on our planet these days (crocs and those crazy lizards with the fan necks) but we will never see a dinosaur walking down the street. There’s also so many cool films and TV shows about dinosaurs, some of my favourites being The Land before Time and Dinosaurs (the awesome TV show from the 90’s with the dinosaurs who were really human-like!)
The other cool thing about dinosaurs is that you can have all sorts of fun with their names. Take for example my blog name - Readaraptor - that came about because I was experimenting with different dinosaur-y suffixes and that it worked so well (or at least I thought so.
This brings me back to how this love of dinos came about... Back in like 2007 or something I came across this (http://dev.teezy.com/tshirt/25-Thesaurus-Hoodie) which I now own... I fell in love instantly and needed it. I am a language geek at heart, I love words and especially love it when different words can be linked to different things. I loved that I had never thought about a thesaurus in this way before and it blew my mind (I obviously have quite a small mind! haha)
My interest was piqued further when I noticed that New Look’s designers had noticed the same thing I had and started to do a range of t-shirts with different dinos dressed up, including ‘geekasaurus’ ‘vegesaurus’ and ‘discosaurus’ - come on tell me thats not awesome!  Other places have picked thisup too and theres a whole range of stuff you can find online that uses the fact you make almost any word sound like a dinosaur. I even have a purple ‘punkosarus’ hoodie which features a dino with a mohawk and punk style spikes... whats not to love there!
I’ve taken this further than just messing with words to make them sound like dinosaurs now though and you can quite honestly find at least one dinosaur thing in nearly every room in my house. I have dinosaur bookends, a dino canvas prints, dino eggcups, a sandwich cutter in dinosaur shape, clothing, moneyboxes and soft toys. My collection is growing every day and it could quite possibly get out of hand any day now but nevermind, we all need our quirks eh!
Dinosaurs are the greatest and if you don’t believe me I urge you; next time someone annoys you... call them a stupid diplodocus and try not to laugh, or read through a list of dinosaur names and tell me some of them don’t bring a smile to your face!

Thanks a bunch to Raimy for her love of Dino's and being brave enough to geek out in aid of Geek Week.  Raimy blogs at : www.readaraptor.co.uk and tweets @raimy_rawr

  1. They're awesome! I once worked alongside Palaeontologists and when I left they gave me a fossil of a dinosaur bone! It's amazing. But I haven't a tshirt yet.
