News: Seeing the World Differently event and Dyslexia Awareness Week

As some of you know I'm very passionate about the issue of Dyslexia and Dyspraxia and think it's a condition that many people live with but few really understand how much it can affect daily life and that there are varying degrees of it so two people can have the same condition but have completely different extents of how it impacts their lives.

Hot Keys Books are hosting a very interesting panel at the Free Word event with the Booktrust as part of Dyslexic Awareness Week with author of Maggot Moon, Sally Gardner.  It's being described as " A celebration of reading and dyslexia" and looks to be a perfect way to highlight the week and the issue.  Quite honestly, I'm SO annoyed that I can't go because it's an event I'd love to attend but I felt like I should highlight it to all those that may be able to attend as it sounds amazing.

  1. I wish I could go to this event, being dyslexic myself, I think it would have been fab to attend!

I remember when I first started working at the bookshop a customer had asked me for something and I couldn't understand what he had said so I asked him to spell it and he questioned this and made a comment, wanting to be polite I said I was dyslexic, not that I couldn't understand his muttering, he then asked why would I being working in a bookshop if I couldn't spell! In a polite tone I said, being dyslexic doesn't mean that I can't spell, it hasn't stopped me getting my GCSEs, A'levels, a Degree and the fact that I was half way through my Masters! (which I now have) And that shut him up!!

I find people's ignorance to dyslexia amazing!!

I have customers who now come to the shop asking for my recommends and wanting to know what I have read. I had a mother not long back who explained she had just found out her daughter was dyslexic and she seemed upset by this! It was sad to see but once I told her about myself I saw a change in her and it was nice to be able to talk to her about her daughter and tell her about books that were great for her daughter to read.

I still don't think enough is done around this subject in schools!
