Review: Fire City by Bali Rai

GoodReads

Twenty-five years ago the world changed forever. A great war, which had raged for three years ended, and the reign of the Demons began...

Within the crumbling walls of Fire City, fifteen-year-old Martha is a member of the resistance, a small band of humans fighting for freedom in a lawless and horrifying new world. Amidst the chaos of battle arrives Jonah, a handsome stranger with a thirst for revenge and a power to destroy the Demon rulers.

As Martha and Jonah’s lives collide, the future of the resistance is altered forever. The battle for humankind will now begin. An epic story of catastrophe, survival and the power of humanity.

THE HUNGER GAMES meets TERMINATOR with Demons, by multi-award winning author Bali Rai

Review

I've always heard of Bali Rai's work but never picked it purely because my reading load is massive but I'd always heard excellent things and then his latest book popped up on Random House Children's Books news letter to me and I got rather excited.  Not only because I'd finally read some of his work but because the blurb sounded fantastic and I could gush for several pages about the cover which reminds me of some stunning video games meets graphic novels in a city falling under demon rule.  It was high on my want list and was lucky to get a copy.

The story is simple and yet complex at the same time.  Martha is part of an underground resistance against the Demon's that rule over the city, Fire City as it is known, and Jonah appears and she's drawn to him but these are dangerous times to find a bit of romance.  A war years ago meant the Demons and their human minions have divided society and those "unwanted" are left to near death and forced into slavery.  There's also The Hunt where Demons take the sick or old and put them in areas for them to solely attack and feast on their souls.  Life is hard and horrid but Jonah has brought hope with his mysterious appearance in Fire City.  The resistance can fight back but to what end?

I completely enjoyed this book and even though it's a step outside the norm for Bali Rai it was an utterly wonderful story and the characters and plot lines were so well thought out that I can't wait for more (I hope there is another book because it's just cruel to end it there!).  Martha was a strong MC who's world has been crumbling and she's still standing strong in the face of it all because she has faith and hope for better things.  This book is very graphic with the gore though so if you're not good with blood and guts I'd say consider yourself warned.  Personally I loved that but I often do prefer a book that is a touch on the dark side.

Compelling storytelling with character threads that come together in a tangle of stories that complete balance one and other.  Messy and gruesome in the best possible way.
